Jordanhill Out of School Service (JOSS)

Jordanhill Out of School Service (JOSS)

Position: Manager

Hours: 9am-6pm, Monday to Friday plus attendance at evening meetings and weekend events as and when required

An exciting opportunity has arisen at our out of school club.

We are searching for an experienced, fun, patient and enthusiastic individual to lead our friendly team in the role of Manager.

Children tell us they want those who lead our service to be:

  • Cheerful
  • Calm
  • Organised
  • Inclusive
  • Respectful
  • Kind-hearted

As the Manager, you will manage the staff team to ensure the club operates at the highest standard, in line with the organisation's policies and procedures as well as all local and national best practice guidance and legislation.

We are looking for individuals who are motivated, who wish to progress their career in the school age childcare sector, with a desire to take on further responsibility and develop their skills at management level.

The successful candidate will have knowledge of the Getting it Right for Every Child (GIRFEC) principles and SHANARRI indicators, whilst being devoted to enhancing children's development, wellbeing and play experiences. The successful candidate will also have knowledge of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), championing children's rights and the protection of children from all forms of abuse.

The successful candidate will be comfortable coaching staff to deliver excellent playwork practice, as well as building strong relationships with parents/carers, schools and other professionals and stakeholders.

This role is classed as regulated work. A job offer will therefore be subject to membership of the PVG scheme which we, the organisation will help you with. Registration (and maintenance of registration) with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) is also mandatory. You must hold or be willing to achieve relevant qualifications stipulated by the SSSC.

Please note that although the service only operates during term-time the manager is employed full time. There is currently a staff team of 25 who care for the 287 registered children who use the service which operates out of the local church halls. On a daily basis JOSS can have 90 children at any one session but due to the unusal dismissal times of the local school we normally cater for 150 children throughout the day.

The service is much valued by local parents and we have long waiting lists for current use and up until 2028. We are fortunate to have the use of several areas within the church halls which allows us to designate specific activities such as active play, construction, reading and quiet, P6/7 and craft areas. When daylight permits we use the local park to ensure children get opportunities for outdoor play plus we escort over 100 children each week to tennis lessons. In addition, we work closely with Spanish teachers and we also escort children to and from these lessons.

There are good relationships between the JOSS and school staff and relevant information is frequently shared to ensure a better experience for the children. There is not enough space within the church halls to allow for an admin area so we have an additional space in Anniesland Road which is a short distance from the main service. The office is used on a daily basis by the manager, assistant manager and senior playworkers to ensure the smooth running of the service.

The successful applicant will shadow the current manager for a significant time to ensure the continued smooth running of JOSS.
