Staying Out - Outdoor Play and Activities in Out of School Care

Our recent re-opening survey has shown that more services are providing outdoor play opportunities on a daily basis but we also understand services may have some uncertainties about delivering outdoor play & accessing green space, especially as we move into winter. In this online conversation we shalllook at outdoor play practices and activities, and how to overcome potential barriers.

Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from speakers, as well as discuss ideas and network.We know that some of you are already providing Forest School/great outdoor play opportunities- it would be great if you could share your experiences and practice.

Sophie will talk about the Scottish Government's vision for increased outdoor play, our virtual nature school project, and upcoming chapter of Out to Play aimed at out of school care settings.

Mairi leads on outdoor childcare & Early Years Expansion for the Thrive Outdoors team and is a passionate advocate of the benefits of playing, running, splashing, climbing and discovering in the outdoors.

Zoe Sills, Nursery Manager, Earthtime's Forest School Nurseries

Earthtime Nursery is a Care Inspectorate registered outdoor nursery based in Moray run under Forest School Principles. Cooking on a wood fire and using tools are incorporated in the sessions, giving the children confidence in their own abilities and the opportunity to develop strong cooperation skills.

Robert McKinnon, Manager, Pollokshaws After School Service (PASS)

PASS have recently been awarded funding from Sustrans Scotland (via their Spaces for People Programme) for the 'Connecting Pollokshaws' project. The project aims to create an attractive, inclusive, people & cycle friendly neighbourhood in Pollokshaws to promote health & well-being and create a sense of identity and pride in Pollokshaws heritage.

One of the key objectives of the project is to revitalise and improve the quality of the green spaces and pedestrian and cycle routes in the area to provide more opportunities for active travel and outdoor learning and play.
